Harrogate was built on stone and slate. Big villas with bay windows, tall chimneys and slate roofs, most of them well over a century old.
These houses were built well, and they reward a builder who repairs them the way they were made. That means lime where the walls need to breathe, slate matched to the original, and joinery that fits the period.
Before starting Barlow Construction, our founder worked on estate projects including Rudding Park, just outside the town. We bring that care to extensions, loft conversions and full renovations across the town, from the Duchy to Pannal, Killinghall and Harlow Hill.

Victorian and Edwardian stone houses need a builder who knows slate, lime and old timber. That is most of what we do in Harrogate.

Slate roofs, valleys, leadwork and chimney stacks on the big stone villas between the Stray and the Duchy.
Roofing and Chimneys
Lime and gypsum plastering matched to the age of the house, with cornices and ceilings repaired rather than lost.
Plastering and Rendering
Extensions in stone with slate roofs and slim glazing, designed to look as if they were always there.
Extensions
Dormers dressed to suit a stone house, giving a top floor bedroom without spoiling the roof line.
Loft Conversions
Walls rebuilt and repointed in lime, so solid stone can breathe the way it was built to.
Period Restoration
Big period rooms reworked into kitchens and family spaces, including the structural work behind them.
Renovations and Kitchens
Roofs, chimneys, stonework and lime. Repaired the way the house was built.
Many Harrogate roofs are over a hundred years old. Slipped slates, worn valleys and leaning chimney stacks are common, and are best repaired before water gets in.
Solid stone walls pointed in cement trap damp. We rake out and repoint in lime, which lets the wall dry out the way it was designed to.
Large parts of Harrogate sit in conservation areas. Planning is now handled by North Yorkshire Council. We work with architects who know what is likely to be approved.

I have no hesitation in awarding the full 5 stars for the high standard of the repointing and other work, and for the extra attention given to improving the look as well as the structure of my house. At all times the team took great care to make the process a smooth and pleasurable one. One of the reasons I contacted Barlow Construction was their membership of the Federation of Master Builders, and that has certainly proved its worth.
