Builders in York, from the terraces to the villages

York is about 40 minutes from our yard. We cover the whole city and the villages to the north and east.

Inside the ring road it is mostly brick: Victorian terraces in South Bank and Clifton, 1930s semis in Acomb and Dringhouses, and many houses that would benefit from a kitchen extension, a loft or a complete renovation.

North of the city it changes. Near Stillington we restored a barn and converted it into a home, renovated the original farmhouse and built two substantial extensions. It is the kind of whole property project we enjoy most.

Building in York

City of York Council

York has its own planning authority and many conservation areas. Inside the city walls almost everything needs careful handling, and the architectural practices we work with know the process.

Terraces and semis

Victorian terraces suit a side return or rear extension and a loft. 1930s semis often take a two storey side extension well.

The villages

Out towards Stillington, Easingwold and Sutton on the Forest there are farmhouses, barns and bigger plots, where conversions and new builds come into play.

What clients say

Foundation blockwork for a barn conversion
★★★★★

Barlow Construction built the foundation blockwork and external brickwork up to DPC, and prepared for the ground floor slab, on my timber frame barn conversion. The team showed flexibility and good problem solving on a complex site. They worked quickly and accurately to produce level and square foundations to tight tolerances, a very sound base for the timber frame, and a high quality finish to the brickwork.
